What does a Magento to Shopify migration involve?
A migration combines catalogue and customer-data mapping, storefront design, URL planning, integrations and a controlled operational change. It is not a direct copy of one database into another. Establish which records and behaviours the business needs, which can transfer and which need a different implementation.
Audit what is trading today
Inventory products, variants, attributes, categories, content, integrations and extensions. Identify business rules hidden in custom code or manual spreadsheets. Speak with fulfilment, customer service and finance teams as well as the people who manage the storefront.
Map data before moving it
Create field mappings and representative samples. Check variant structure, images, inventory, prices and customer details. Keep a record of unsupported fields and decide how they will be handled. Customer login continuity needs a deliberate communication plan; do not assume account credentials transfer unchanged.
Protect discovery with a URL plan
Inventory valuable existing URLs and map each to the closest useful destination. Preserve relevant content and metadata where appropriate. Test redirect chains, canonical tags, internal links and sitemap coverage. Search visibility can fluctuate during a migration; no responsible plan guarantees that rankings will remain unchanged.
Rehearse complete orders
Use realistic catalogue and fulfilment scenarios in a test environment. Check inventory changes, discounts, payments, tax configuration, shipping, customer notifications and refunds where applicable. Confirm that each connected system receives the expected event and that failed events can be investigated.
Make launch a controlled decision
Agree a content freeze, final data import, DNS change, validation checklist and named launch owner. Define the conditions for stopping or rolling back before launch night. Keep the old platform available as required by the transition plan and retention obligations.
Watch the business after the switch
Monitor orders, fulfilment, payment reconciliation, error reports and search coverage. Compare against a baseline while accounting for campaign activity, stock availability and seasonality. Keep a prioritised backlog of improvements rather than treating release as the end of the engagement.
